A Texas guy who goes by “Goldsmith”

Don’t believe everything you read on the web. It may seem like an easy thing to do but check this out. There’s a story that was making the rounds about a Texas guy named Goldsmith who was sentenced to death for his third misdemeanor weed conviction about a year ago. Got a lot of attention for exposing the horror of a marijuana death penalty.

A bullshit story

Since it came from Texas, home of such liberal pundits as the Bush clan, it was easy to swallow whole. You can read it here.  It’s a bullshit story.  Sad to say lots of folks got duped. The thinking appeared to be “well, that’s Texas.” Fortunately, the story was indeed bullshit and was, thankfully, debunked. Read it here.

But…it does happen in a lot of countries

But even though this was a hoax, I hope we won’t all rest on our big fat asses thinking all is well. There are plenty of places in the world where having a little weed will in fact put your life in the balance. Read them and weep here: Fucked up countries that will kill you for possessing weed

Lest you think that the US isn’t really among them, dig this: In the USA it is entirely possible to be sentenced to life in prison for weed charges. Now you may not think that constitutes a marijuana death penalty but dig this: if you can’t get out of jail until you die, isn’t it really the same thing?

I’m not so sure we’re really all that far beyond Egypt and Saudi Arabia in this sense.
